The decommissioning of Murchison has now begun with the engineering-down and cleaning of the platform and the campaign to plug and abandon the oil wells in the Murchison field well underway.

The News update below gives a thumbnail guide to the highlights of the preparations and activity since the project’s inception.

  • Formal approval granted for the Murchison Decommissioning Programmes.

  • 16th May 2014
  • Final Decommissioning Programmes formally submitted to DECC for approval.

  • 30th April 2014
  • The Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change invites CNRI to submit its final Decommissioning Programmes

  • In a major milestone for the UK North Sea, CNR International brought production from its iconic Murchison field to a permanent close today. Click here to read the full article >

  • 28th February 2014
  • Murchison production was shut down for the final time and formal notification of Cessation of Production from the Murchison Field for 31 March made to DECC.

  • 20th November 2013
  • Jacket Derogation application submitted to DECC for the UK government to present to the OSPAR Commission

  • October and November 2013
  • Environmental Statement and Stakeholder Engagement Report both updated to reflect statutory and public consultation contributions and responses.

  • 7th October 2013
  • Decommissioning services contract awarded to Aker Solutions. Read the press release.

  • 3rd October 2013
  • Well services contractors completed their safety and operational induction prior to mobilising for the platform well plugging and abandonment campaign.

  • 13th September 2013
  • Post Consultation Draft of the Murchison Decommissioning Programme submitted to DECC, incorporating comments made during statutory and public consultation.

  • 31st May 2013
  • Draft Decommissioning Programme for the Murchison Field submitted to DECC, triggering formal consultation which runs to 12 July 2013. See Decommissioning Programme for further details.

  • 27th May 2013
  • Ninian Field granted Brownfield Allowance status by the UK government, extending its life and postponing decommissioning plans for Ninian Northern as a result.

  • 8th November 2012
  • A second stakeholder workshop was held to review the draft Comparative Assessment Report on the recommendation to be taken forward in the Murchison Decommissioning Programme. While there were questions about the topics under discussion, issues raised by stakeholders had already been addressed and this was acknowledged by those attending the event. Follow-up invitations were issued to all stakeholders, whether or not they have attended the workshop, to invite further comment and questions. Papers from the event are accessible here.

  • 14th March 2012
  • A stakeholder consultation workshop on the Decommissioning Programme for the Murchison platform was held in Aberdeen on 14 March. This covered the emerging findings from the pre-planning studies to date and highlighted where issues are starting to emerge in the development of the Decommissioning Programme.

  • Following comments from stakeholders, the scope of the Environmental Impact Assessment Scoping Report for the Murchison field (originally prepared in May 2011) has been revised and is available for download here:

  • The EIA scoping report for the Murchison field is the first stage of completing the environmental impact assessment process. The May 2011 report describes the key project characteristics with a brief outline of the environmental sensitivities arising from the Murchison decommissioning process. The report is being made available to encourage early discussion with all interested parties and provide focus for the later full EIA process.

  • UK decommissioning website activated to support the public consultation process and keep interested parties informed of progress. Letters sent to potential participants in the consultation dialogue to alert them of CNRI’s intentions and to establish contact for future communications.
